Volvo Trucks unveiled a new, fully electric rear axle during the 2022 IAA transport show held in Hannover, Germany.
According to Volvo, the new e-axle enables an even longer range for its electric trucks due to its ability to carry more batteries.
The company claims to have the widest range of battery electric trucks in the industry, with six different models in serial production.
According to Jessica Sandström, SVP of Global Product Management at Volvo Trucks, “This is a breakthrough for electric trucks and a clear signal that there will be a huge demand for public fast-chargers for heavy trucks soon, not least along highways.”
A few years from now, Volvo Trucks will begin serial production of trucks with the new e-axle, which will complement its current battery-electric vehicle lineup.
According to Jessica, “We will continue with our versatile battery electric trucks already in production as they can currently cover a wide range of transport assignments. In a few years, we will add this new rear e-axle for customers covering longer routes than today.”
Toward zero emissions, Volvo Trucks has a three-fold strategy; battery electric, fuel cell electric, as well as combustion engines that use renewable fuels such as biogas, HVO, and even green hydrogen.
“Different technical solutions are needed to tackle climate change since the availability of energy and fuel infrastructure differs between countries and regions and also between different transport assignments,” Jessica concluded.
