Global immigration’s upcoming complexities emphasize the need for expatriates employees to be supported.
Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 12:00 PM ET, Worldwide ERC® will convene a panel of mobility experts to discuss how employers can create a workplace that is empathetic to expat employees. Register for this webinar if you haven’t already.
A recent surge in tech layoffs and pandemic-related backlogs have created an uncertain immigration environment for expats. The complexity of the global immigration system, coupled with existing hurdles and shortcomings, emphasizes the importance of providing adequate expat support to employers around the globe.
To lead this conversation, we have assembled a team of mobility professionals and immigration specialists, including:
– Berry Appleman & Leiden LLP’s Tiffany Derentz and September Weinberger
– From Deloitte, Jurga McCluskey
– Deloitte Middle East’s Hadi Allawi
Specifically, I am interested in hearing how companies can create policies that are compliant while still boosting recruitment, retention, and employee morale.
There have been two recent developments regarding expats that we would like to share with you:
– Canadian Ban on Home Sales to Foreign Buyers: We continue to work with our colleagues at the Canadian Employee Relocation Council (CERC) to amend this ban that has a significant impact on expats. In spite of the fact that Canadian officials have amended the ban in order to address some of its adverse impacts, particularly for non-Canadians with 183 days or more left on their work permits or work authorizations, there are still a number of key issues to be addressed, particularly with regard to relocation management companies. This issue will continue to be monitored.
– H-4 Spouses Can Work in the United States: Read our article about how a federal district court recently ruled that the H-4 EAD program is lawful, allowing spouses of H-1B visa holders to continue working.
