It states that sustainable development is “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” Thus, CSR is one of the primary means of achieving the goal of sustainable development for all nations today. Sustainable development and corporate social responsibility are closely related business concepts that have greatly affected corporate governance in the early 21st century. Sustainable development involves the use of environmentally responsible and efficient operational practices.

Responsiveness to Stakeholders – As we know today consumers prefer to do business with companies that give back to the communities they serve, according to Business News Daily. To achieve full congruence with these areas of responsibility, a company must operate with fairness and honesty with customers and suppliers. Socially aware companies give back to and actively participate in local communities, and value employees, while earning profits for shareholders. Meeting expectations of each of these stakeholder groups is a tall order. Companies at times have created jobs specifically in CSR to emphasize its importance.

Protection of the Environment – One factor integral to both sustainable development and CSR is the environment. CSR and sustainable development goals both emphasize stronger environmental preservation, recycling and renewal programs. Employers interested in supporting the environment may involve all employees in efforts to promote green-friendly operations, offer paid time off for employees to participate in green activities or create recycling programs promoted internally and with customers. We also encourage employees to reuse materials and resources whenever possible to cut down on costs and waste. Organizations truly committed to environment protection often invest in green-friendly resources and business processes.

There for from here by we have formed a CSR & Sustainability Team to activities – to implement, develop and monitor Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with in our organization. Various drives have been initiated by the Sustainability Team and successfully ongoing.

Retrieve, Recycle and Reuse

ISS Relocation LLC, one of the leading relocation service providers in this region over 2 decades, is committed towards the Corporate Services Responsibility or Sustainable Development connected or associated with Relocation Services where we use every moment of opportunities. In line with United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, our CSR team has formulated several initiatives. Any CSR initiatives involve individuals within a business or organization concluding that a problem or issue exists and then devising a solution to help tackle it.

Retrieve, Recycle and Reuse 

In Relocation Services, we heavily depend on various packaging materials including corrugated carton boxes, polythene sheets, wrapping papers, air bubble film, tapes, lumber (wooden batons), plywood and various other materials too. Every opportunity to retrieve such materials in good order and reuse them wherever possible, would directly impact on our natural resources which are limited in supply. Also, by reusing materials, we save the precious energy utilized in the manufacturing process of such materials thus supports carbon neutrality.

ISS Relocations team have implemented a unique drive of retrieving cartons, bubble sheets, wooden crates and plywood from import shipments, local moves and from various customers/vendors outside our organization. The warehouse crew carefully retrieves the neat and clean materials, store them in the resolute “recycled material” location, and reuse the same with the customer’s written permission for their local moves and local storage jobs and treated wood and plywood for export wooden crating. We are proud to say that many of our customers appreciated this drive and we could service them on a lower price and simultaneously support our environment in a unique way.

Green & Clean Workplace

In addition to supporting environmental sustainability, a good and vibrant working atmosphere motivates and rejuvenates employee productivity and thus considers as the key for success of every organization; be it office or any work premises. Our target to make the workplace green & clean gave more enthusiasm to the team and we have initiated many ecofriendly drives.

This environmental sustainability drive is complemented by reduce reuse recycle activities like keeping live plants in the office and workplaces, preserve energy by switching off the lights and AC when not in use, shifting from normal lamps to LED lamps, promoting double side printing on A4 papers, reducing usage of disposable utilities wherever possible etc. 

We believe this drive will predominantly contribute towards awareness of our employees, customers, and our supply chain whom we are interacting regularly and together we can contribute towards carbon neutral environment.

Health Is Wealth

Any CSR initiatives involve individuals within a business or organization concluding that a problem or issue exists and then devising a solution to help tackle itHuman Resource plays a significant role in developing positive business culture and improving employee engagement and productivity. Therefore, employee wellness and personal development are inevitable for the success of every healthy organization.

Physical fitness of the employees contributes for healthier workplace. Keeping that in mind, ISS initiated taking the staff members to the Gymnasium @ 5 pm on all working days. We are targeting all employees from office as well as warehouse to get participated in this program every day 1 hour

ISS team also participates and encourages employees to be part of several health enhancing activities in the region throughout the year. It also helps as below:

Social Connections – Providing an opportunity for colleagues to connect outside of a formal work environment fosters healthy personal and professional relationships. By giving employees a gym (or a space to move), companies show proof they want to see workers thrive beyond the workspace. Plus, working out with other people can help hold your employees accountable for workouts. They will be much less likely to skip if someone is waiting for them at the office gym.

Stress Relief – It is no secret that stress wreaks havoc on the human body. Stressed out employees have trouble focusing, thinking clearly, and making rational decisions. Reports show exercise helps improve mental health by providing clarity to better handle stress effectively. Exercise reduces cortisol levels (the body’s stress hormone) while sweating releases endorphins that help your mind relax. Instead of reaching for the office sweets, employees can burn some calories.

Heart Health – cardiovascular disease  (CVD) is the leading cause of death for both men and women all over. Regular exercise promotes heart health by lowering bad cholesterol levels (LDL) and raising good cholesterol levels (HDL). Exercise helps strengthen the heart, allowing it to work harder and longer. New blood vessels will also form from regular physical activity, which decreases blood pressure.

More Energy – Energy levels are an important indicator of well-being and engagement. Exercise improves circulation and strengthens the heart muscle – providing an instant rush of energy.

Weight Management – Obesity in the workplace is a significant issue for employers. When paired with a healthy diet, exercise will boost weight loss and tone the body. Those who exercise regularly have a much lower risk of obesity.

Productivity – A Harvard study showed the benefits of exercise are not just physical. There is evidence that it boosts mental abilities like:

  • Enhanced creativity
  • Quicker learning
  • Sharper memory
  • Improved concentration

Some research suggests that exercising during working hours can also pump-up work performance. A Leeds Metropolitan University study found that workers who visited the gym during working hours were more productive, managed their time better, and felt more work satisfaction.

Disease Prevention – You have heard the saying “exercise is the best medicine,” and it is true. Inactivity takes a toll on the body and exercise has a tremendous effect on the prevention of numerous chronic diseases. Moving helps muscles grow stronger, keeps hormones balanced, and decreases inflammation throughout the body. An active lifestyle significantly lowers the risk of heart disease, diabetes, asthma, chronic pains and arthritis, and certain types of cancer. An active life just might mean a longer, more enjoyable life.

Improved Immune System – Regular exercise helps flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways – reducing the risk of the common cold, flu, and other illnesses. Physical activity strengthens your employees’ immune systems – making them less susceptible to whatever bug is going around the office. Employees that workout regularly are also generally healthier than their sedentary counterparts. This means fewer sick days, less medical appointments, and overall reduced absenteeism.

Remember it does not take a state-of-the-art gym to get individuals moving, either. Our gym small; we have treadmills and few weights. Even a small space with a weight rack and resistance bands can give employees a great full body workout.

Save Water & Energy

United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals, SDG # 6 and SDG #7 emphasize on clean Water & Sanitation and Affordable and Clean Energy, respectively. Our CSR team has initiated arrangements for clean water and sanitation as well as “save energy” campaign promoting smart lighting solutions by means of various methods. Initiatives like installation of GPS on all company vehicles, using smarter moving solutions like consolidated/groupage shipments to various destinations, awareness signages, trainings etc. are also contributing for these goals.

Drinking Water – RO with UV Filter installation

Average consumption of packaged drinking water at the warehouse was ten cans a day (20 liters size) and annually it is counted 3600 cans/ 72000 liters. Whereas the office consumption was approximately 14400 liters per annum. Our CSR Team initiated to install RO Filters at both locations and connected directly with the DEWA water supply line.

This initiative also helps us to save plastic by reducing the usage of water bottles in great volume on daily basis.

Save Energy

We use huge warehouses for storing customers’ shipments long term and for transit purposes. Also, the same warehouses are being used for storing packaging materials and daily operations – loading/unloading activities. Obviously, the energy consumption levels were high in these warehouses especially where higher tonnage AC units are functioning 24/7 in addition to the industrial fans and normal light fittings.

To reduce energy consumption, we have adopted following measures in the warehouses and office.

Waste Management

Waste Management

For every organization, waste management is an extraordinary task- start from storing, sorting, transportation, and safe disposal of the same. Most of the waste ends up in municipal landfills or dumpsites, the organic waste generates a large amount of methane, a potential greenhouse gas whereas paper and plastic wastes will also become harmful if not processed scientifically.

Waste management in the country is coordinated through local authorities. Waste issues are handled through recycling and converting waste to energy and resources, modern technologies and improved waste separation and collection systems. The UAE aims to reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management. Being a country promoting circular economy, we should adhere to the rules and guidelines of waste management as stipulated by the Waste Management Department, Dubai Municipality.

Wastes in Relocation Services

Broadly speaking, we have three types of packing/unpacking wastes – paper/cardboard waste, polythene waste and wood waste. Our crew collect the unpacking debris immediately after the import delivery/local move gets completed and carefully segregates at the source. Reusable materials will be bundled separately and stored in the location designated for reuse materials in the warehouse. The left-out wastes- unusable polythene pieces, bubble films, packing paper, torn cartons, cardboard pieces, wood waste etc. would be deposited into large skips after necessary sorting.

AMC with Union Paper Mills -Paper and Plastic Waste

We have made AMC with Union Paper Mills who collects the paper waste and unusable cartons/cardboard pieces on alternate days. The fund from this debris sales is used for various CSR activities- green office initiatives and donating meals box to one hundred needy people monthly.

Donating to EEG’s OROC project (One Root One Community-Tree)

ISS Relocations is actively participating with the Environmental Sustainability drives in the region and as a part of the same, we support EEG’s OROC project throughout the year. We donate paper and plastic waste to support the project. Additionally, we support EEG by letting our truck and driver for waste collection from other corporates and offices twice in a week.

For each two tons of paper and plastic waste donated, we earn bonus points which get us the privilege of planting trees in the prescribed location in the month of December 2022.

AMC with MR SKIPS for non-recyclable waste disposal

Annual Maintenance Contract is signed with MR SKIPS for disposal of non-recyclable waste and this vendor picks the wastes twice or thrice in a week so that we could manage the waste in the best feasible way.

ISS feel proud to be one of the contributors towards Environmental Sustainability and would keep organizing/participating such projects supporting the nation to manage the waste better.

Charity Giving

Giving back to Society

Little acts of kindness can make this world happier, and it means a lot while the same is joined hands together with the business world. One of the major essences of Corporate Service Responsibility is generosity in all its forms- giving one’s time, talent, and treasure for good causes. The CSR policies of ISS Relocation LLC also stresses the importance of sharing and caring by actively interact with the communities and the society in the region. 

ISS Relocation initiative: 100 Meals pack distribution every month

UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #2 Zero Hunger targets to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition in this world by 2030.  UAE’s National Food Security Strategy 2051 also aims to zero hunger and access to safe and nutritious food to all.  

ISS Relocation LLC’s CSR team envisaged a unique program of one hundred meals pack distribution every month to the needy people in the country.   The beauty of this project is that the fund for the same is raised from the sale of unpacking debris obtained from the delivery jobs (import and local move deliveries).  Our CSR team carefully identifies the needy people in the region and connects with the concerned persons before planning the date of meals distribution. 

Also, recent Dubai initiative of  Free bread for all: Dubai delivery riders, laborer is among those benefiting from initiative motivate us to participate in such act of kindness. “This initiative aims to enhance the principle of sustainability in humanitarian work and spread social solidarity in society,” said Zainab Juma Al Tamimi, Director of MBRGCEC. She also confirmed that there were plans to increase the number of vending machines. “There is an expansion plan in Dubai and other emirates after 6 months.”

Personal effects collected and donated (MOU with Dar Al Ber Society)

During the relocation process, there are occasions our customers would not need certain items to be included in their next move to the new city or country.   The decision could be due to various reasons like limited allowance of volume/weight as per their company’s relocation policy, or the residence at the new location is smaller and cannot accommodate more items and sometimes because of restriction of carrying certain stuff into the new city.  Our CSR team identified an opportunity of collecting such items during the move out process and neatly sort, pack and label the same in ISS warehouse.

An MOU is signed with well-known Dar Al Ber Society in the UAE for donating clothes, food stuff, books, toys, shoes, and other household items which we collect from our customers when they move out from the city. The above items in good condition would be carefully sorted and brought to ISS warehouse and neatly folded and packed. The same would be handed over to Dar Al Ber Society who distributes the same to the needy within the country or abroad. The same way the unused and packed foodstuff with long shelf life would be distributed to the needy in the nearby locations.

ISS Relocations strive to provide exceptional relocation experiences to all our valued customers globally since last many years. We have been committed to serve our customers by going extra mile throughout their relocation process from point A to point B. We believe sustainability occupies centre-stage in an enterprise like ours, which is dependent on environmental factors and equipment sourced from our surroundings. We are conscious about the fact that our ability to provide our services efficiently relies hugely on the elements around us. Keeping that in mind, we have initiated several efficient CSR programs to give back to the environment and to the community.

We are delighted to announce our new steps into Sustainable Growth. Sustainability, in simple terms means, “meeting our needs without affecting the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”  Sustainability has three main pillars – economic, environmental, and social and ISS Relocation by inception is working to demonstrate a unique commitment towards sustainability.

Our entry and contribution towards Sustainable Development

A Sustainability Team is formed to lead CSR activities – to implement, develop and monitor Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the organization. Various drives have been initiated by the Sustainability Team and successfully ongoing.

Environment

Reuse, Recycle & Renovate: Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as trash and turning them into new products. Recycling can benefit the community and the environment which the humanity would need for many hundreds of years to come. Recycling is famed to be one of the most important aspects of sustainability. This makes it paramount in the sustainability process. Our team at ISS Relocations, considers this aspect with utmost seriousness and endeavouring towards a better planet earth by contributing the way we can.

Various projects have been already kickstarted and ongoing. A few of them are listed below

Wood and plywood recycling project

We have received (ongoing) 1800 shipping boxes which were used for importing IT Server equipment from various parts of the world to Abu Dhabi location. These shipping boxes were made of 2×4”and 4×4” wooden batons and 12 mm plywood with steel plates and locks to secure the servers kept inside. Our warehouse team have received them at the yard, disassembled the boxes, segregated the metal parts and wooden planks, and reused them for preparing lift vans, wooden crates and cases, pallets etc. Below table gives a clear picture about the result of this recycling program in addition to the saving of a huge cost of buying brand new wood and ply woods.

The warehouse crew carefully retrieves the neat and clean materials, keep them on records and with the customer’s permission reuses them for local move and local storage jobs. We are happy to say that many of our customers appreciated this drive and we could service them on a lower price and simultaneously support the environmental sustainability.

Green Office

Save Electricity & Water

At our warehouse, we have replaced all previous lamps with energy saving LED lamps. We continue educate our crew and warehouse team to keep an eye on usage of electricity and water. Conducting Periodical inspection of the wash- rooms, water pumps etc, maintenance of the same whenever required; warehouse maintenance register is kept for documenting these activities for monitoring and evaluation purposes.

Drinking Water – RO Filter installation

We were using 10 cans (of 5.2-gallon size) at the warehouse per day and annually it is counted 3000 cans/577 gallons. We have decided to buy RO Filter one for the warehouse and one for office too.

Waste Management

We have made AMC with Union Paper Mills who collects the paper waste and unusable carton pieces on alternate days. The fund from this collection is used for various green office initiatives and planned for donating meals to the needy in the UAE.

ISS Relocations believes in co-existence and little actions of kindness can make this world a happier place! We are committed to actively contribute to the social well-being of communities and society through various social and environmental measures.

MOU with Dar Al Ber Society

An MOU is under process for donating clothes, food stuff and other household items which we collect from our customers when they move out from the city. The clothes which are not in use and good in condition would be carefully chosen and collected by the crew as a CSR initiative and the same would be brought to ISS warehouse for neatly folding and packing. The same would be collected by Dar Al Ber Society who distributes the same to the needy within the country or abroad. The same applies for the unused and packed foodstuff with long shelf life, other personal and household effects which customers do not want to move to new residence and our crew collects.

Monthly Food packets distribution

As mentioned earlier, we have a fund from the disposal of waste materials segregated by our team. This fund is planned to buy food packets and distribute to the needy people at the camps etc. Also, the foodstuff and other items collected from customers would be added based on the availability.

Memberships in various CSR organizations and benefits

Initiated the membership with Emirates Environmental Group which is leading the Environmental initiatives in the UAE last 30+ years. There are various drives including planting trees, environmental initiatives, waste management, recycling projects, awareness competition programs for school and college students, various CSR trainings, corporate outreach, and discussion programs. This membership will give us opportunities to actively participate in many CSR programs and we can demonstrate our commitments towards sustainability.

What makes our actions unique?

Being a corporate company that also spends its time to give back to the environment and the community is something ISS believe and implement in day- to-day activities. We are sure this will set a benchmark for the industry, and we keep striving to achieve more in terms of protecting environment and caring our society and thus help our nature for future generations to come!
