During the first meeting of the Working Group Sea Transport in 2023, a positive and optimistic tone was set for the year ahead. After the meeting, FIATA published a press release calling for reasonable free time periods at pre-pandemic levels to be reinstated, based on feedback from delegates.
In the press release, shipping lines are urged to respond to changes in market conditions quickly and to use this period of low demand to improve container quality and cleanliness. Members of FIATA are encouraged to amplify the message and support companies they represent by advocating for better quality containers and reasonable free time for their proper use.

In response to the Sustainable Development Agenda, FIATA joins the 85th UNECE Inland Transport Committee
On Friday 24 February 2023, FIATA was a keynote speaker at the 85th UNECE Inland Transport Committee roundtable on ‘Inland transport connectivity and the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda – Challenges and opportunities’. There are significant external factors that need to be taken into account when delivering logistics services, including the increased pressure on the transportation sector to go carbon-free, the strong push to digitise and automate transportation procedures, and the growing need to adapt current transportation infrastructure assets to climate change challenges.
During the roundtable, participants exchanged views on how to deal with these challenges. Diversity in the panel, which included international organizations and academic hubs, reflected the importance of the challenge in the sector and allowed for consideration of new ideas. In addition to discussing climate change hazards and geo-political emergencies, FIATA was invited to discuss ways to strengthen the resilience of transport networks. A roundtable was an excellent opportunity to showcase some inspiring policies implemented by FIATA members towards a greener future.
Please contact sustainability@fiata.org if you would like more information or have questions about FIATA’s sustainability agenda.
